OUR STORY

Forming Connections

In summer of 2020, a teenager was thinking of ways he could help his community in a way that tied back to what he loved; in his case, he loved basketball. And every day, as he visited his childhood basketball courts of downtown NYC, he saw the faces of new youths coming to practice... Some of them were with their parents, getting cheered on as they made their first shots. Some of them were playing 1on1 with their older siblings. But there were always some shooting by themselves; they didn't have a clear direction, but the love of the game was still there.

That's when the idea popped up in the teenager's head! Could he find a way to get these kids, with their love for the game, a mentor that would train them both on and off the court? And from there, HoopSibs was born. Since 2020, the idea of HoopSibs has expanded from just basketball to other sports as well, and HoopSibs was renamed to Sports Sibs! Football, Soccer, Track and Field... As long as there were other teens willing to help the next generation, Sports Sibs would not be limited to any kind of sports. Our mission is to positively impact NYC's elementary-middle school population, by connecting them to high schoolers who will act as older sibling figures, training them in their respective sports while giving them guidance outside of athletics. So what are you waiting for? Check out the rest of the website to learn more about how you can get involved in Sports Sibs!
